Migrationsverket: 'You can be granted a permit for a maximum of four years at a time, but not for longer than the hosting agreement is valid.' The statute sets a floor rather than a ceiling – 5 b kap. 1 § andra stycket: at least one year, or the shorter period the research is to run; at least two years where a Union or multilateral mobility programme applies.

No general labour-market access is granted.

Requirements

Requirements
Job offer requiredYes as of 2026-08-22[3][7]
Not an employment contract but a hosting agreement (mottagningsavtal) with a research principal approved by the Swedish Research Council under lagen (2008:290). Recorded true because the route cannot be used without a named receiving institution; the instrument is a hosting agreement, which the field cannot distinguish from a contract.
Labour-market testNo as of 2026-08-22[7]
None in 5 b kap.
Qualification requirementdegree as of 2025-02-25[3]
'You can be granted a residence permit as a researcher if you have a doctorate or are eligible to start a doctoral programme.' Since 11 June 2026 a doctoral student holding a hosting agreement can use this route instead of se-study-doctoral.
Employer sponsorshipYes as of 2026-08-22[3][7]
The research principal must be approved by the Swedish Research Council and signs the hosting agreement. 5 b kap. 12 § lets the permit be refused for the host unit's own conduct – sanctions for illegal employment or tax misstatement, unmet social-security or labour obligations, a unit set up mainly to ease entry, or one in liquidation.
Own means requirementSEK 9,700 per month as of 2025-02-25[3][7]
Job-search routeNo as of 2025-02-25[3]

Process

Process
Where to apply fromfrom abroad only as of 2026-08-22[3][7]
5 b kap. 15 § forsta stycket: applied for and granted before entry, and no application may be approved after entry. The second paragraph (Lag 2026:457) lists six exceptions – extension; holders of a 5 b kap. 1, 2 or 4 § permit or a study permit with 30 completed credits or one completed doctoral semester; holders of a Swedish work, business or Blue Card permit; holders of a post-research or post-study job-search permit; family members of those; and exceptional grounds. 5 b kap. 16 § lets the long-term mobility variant under 2 § be filed after entry outright.
Statutory processing time60 days as of 2026-08-22[6]
Utlanningsforordning (2006:97) 4 a kap. 1 § (Forordning 2026:459): an application must be decided at the latest '1. 60 dagar fran det att ansokan lamnades in, om ansokan avser uppehallstillstand enligt 5 b kap. 1 eller 2 § eller utbildning pa forskarniva enligt 3 § utlanningslagen (2005:716), eller 2. 90 dagar … om ansokan avser uppehallstillstand enligt 5 b kap. 3-8 eller 19 § utlanningslagen.' The clock may be extended where the application needs completing, and the applicant must be told. This is a real statutory deadline and it is not the same thing as Migrationsverket's own service commitments or its published percentiles. Migrationsverket separately commits to deciding a complete application within 30 days, which is tighter than the statutory 60 and is a service promise rather than a legal deadline.
Observed processing timeRecorded at the source, but not reducible to a single value[3]

5 b kap. 20 § requires the family member to have applied and been granted a permit before entry, with five exceptions covering extensions and switches.
