| Official name (English) | Children who will live with a parent as of 2025-02-25[2] Page name on Migrationsverket's English site. |
| Legal basis | Utlanningslag (2005:716) 5 kap. 3 § forsta stycket 2 och 3 (Lag 2026:1142) as of 2026-08-22[4][6] Mandatory: a permit 'ska … ges till … ett utlandskt barn som ar ogift och a) har en foralder som ar bosatt i eller har beviljats uppehallstillstand for bosattning i Sverige, eller b) har en foralder som ar gift eller sambo med nagon som ar bosatt i eller har beviljats uppehallstillstand for bosattning i Sverige'. Point 3 covers adoption, including adoptions decided by a Swedish court and those valid here under the Hague Convention. The sibling cases Migrationsverket runs as separate pages – children born in Sweden, children adopted, and children moving to a relative who is not a parent – are not recorded as separate routes; the first two rest on the same section and the third on 5 kap. 3 a § forsta stycket 2, which is se-family-adult-relative's provision applied to a child. |
| Instrument type | residence permit as of 2026-08-22[6] |
Who can apply
| Criminal-record condition | Not applicable[6] 5 kap. 8 § andra stycket disapplies the vandel condition for a permanent permit to anyone under 15, and 5 kap. 17 § forsta stycket excludes cases under 3 § from the general vandel weighing. The condition does not meaningfully attach to a child applicant. |

Permit terms
| Initial duration | up to 2 years as of 2026-08-22[6] 5 kap. 3 g § andra stycket – two years, or the sponsor's own period where the sponsor holds a time-limited protection permit. |
|---|---|
| Renewable | Yes as of 2026-08-22[6] 5 kap. 3 g § tredje stycket. |
| Renewal duration | 2 years as of 2026-08-22[6] |
| Work rights | full as of 2025-02-25[3] A residence permit on ties carries the right to work and study. For a child the practical constraint is age rather than permit: the work right on accompanying-family permits is expressed as applying to children who turn at least 16 during the year. |
Permanent residence and citizenship
| Counts toward permanent residence | Yes as of 2026-08-22[6] Utlanningslag 5 kap. 3 g § fjarde stycket (Lag 2026:1142): a permanent permit may be granted when the current permit expires if the holder has had a time-limited permit for at least three years and the conditions in 3 § or 3 a § and the special requirements in 5 kap. 7 § – self-support and no doubt as to expected vandel – are met. The fifth paragraph shuts this off where the sponsor holds a time-limited permit under 2 b § or 6 § or 12 kap. 18 §, or refugee or subsidiary-protection status. 5 kap. 8 § forsta stycket 1 disapplies the self-support condition for a child. |
|---|---|
| Years to permanent residence on this route | 3 as of 2026-08-22[6] |
Requirements
| Who can sponsor | citizen, permanent resident, temporary permit holder as of 2026-08-22[2][6] The parent, or the parent's spouse or cohabiting partner, must be settled in Sweden or hold a permit for settlement; 5 kap. 3 § tredje stycket extends the ground to sponsors holding a time-limited long-term-resident or protection permit with well-founded prospects of a lasting permit. |
|---|---|
| Eligible relations | minor child as of 2026-08-22[2][6] An unmarried foreign child. 5 kap. 17 § andra stycket adds a consent rule that matters in practice: where the other parent shares custody, that parent must also consent. |
| Sponsor income requirement | Recorded at the source, but not reducible to a single value[2][5][6] |
| Sponsor accommodation requirement | Yes as of 2026-08-22[2][6] 5 kap. 3 b §, subject to the same exemptions. |
| Pre-entry language test | No as of 2026-08-22[6] None. |
Family inclusion
| Family members may be included | No as of 2025-02-25[2] The applicant is the child. A parent moving with or to the child applies on their own ground – se-family-parent-of-child – and a child moving at the same time as a parent is included in that parent's application. |
