Residency route facts

Identity

Identity
Official name (local)Dovoljenje za začasno prebivanje za digitalnega nomada as of 2026-08-25[3][7]
The statutory name. Article 51.a of ZTuj-2, inserted by article 35 of ZTuj-2I, is headed '(dovoljenje za začasno prebivanje za digitalnega nomada)', and the Ministry's page heading is the same words. The card records the permit type as 'digitalni nomad'.
Official name (English)Temporary residence permit for digital nomads as of 2026-08-25[1]
GOV.SI's own English heading for the permit, so this is an official English name rather than a translation.
Legal basisZakon o tujcih (ZTuj-2), 51.a člen, dodan s 35. členom ZTuj-2I (Uradni list RS, št. 32/25) as of 2026-08-25[3][7]
Instrument typeresidence permit as of 2026-08-25[7]
Article 51.a(4): issued in the form provided by article 58 of the Act, with 'digitalni nomad' entered as the permit type.

Who can apply

Who can apply
Nationals not served by this routeEU, EEA as of 2026-08-25[7]
Stated in the route's own statutory text rather than inferred from the general definition: the first indent of article 51.a(1) requires that the applicant is not a national of an EU state or of an EEA member state. Unusually for the Slovenian record, this indent does NOT name Switzerland, where the general third-country definition on the portals does; nothing is asserted about Swiss nationals here.
Minimum ageNot established from a qualifying source
Not established. Article 51.a states no age condition.
Criminal-record conditionRecorded at the source, but not reducible to a single value
Article 51.a(1), fifth indent, excludes issue where any of the refusal grounds in indents 1 to 7 and 9 to 12 of article 55(1) applies, and article 55 sits behind the consolidated text's truncation point and is not amended by ZTuj-2I, so it was not read. The Ministry's page separately lists a home-state non-conviction certificate among the documents. A refusal ground and a documentary condition are different claims and the field cannot carry both.

Permit terms

Permit terms
Initial durationup to 1 year as of 2026-08-25[1][3][7]
Article 51.a(4): issued for the term of the employment contract or the civil-law contract, but for not more than one year; for a self-employed applicant, for one year, or for the intended period of residence where that is shorter.
How the initial term is setmatches the contract
RenewableNo as of 2026-08-25[1][7]
Article 51.a(5): the permit cannot be extended, but the foreigner may apply for another digital nomad permit six months after the previous one expired. GOV.SI explains the rule as reflecting the mobility of this category. A holder who wants to stay on may apply at any time during the permit's validity for a temporary residence permit of a different purpose.
Work rightsown activity only as of 2026-08-25[1][7]
Remote work through communication technology for an employer, client or own business established outside Slovenia. The essential point GOV.SI makes is that the holder does not enter the Slovenian labour market; work for a Slovenian employer or client is outside the permit's purpose, and article 35(5) of ZTuj-2 confines a purpose-bound permit to its purpose.

Permanent residence and citizenship

Requirements

Requirements
Minimum income2 × average monthly net salary in the Republic of Slovenia per month as of 2026-08-25[1][3][7]
Article 51.a(1), fourth indent: sufficient means of subsistence for the period of residence, monthly at least twice the average monthly net salary in the Republic of Slovenia last published in the Official Gazette. Not pre-multiplied. Which published figure the base is has not been settled – see the note on si-povprecna-mesecna-neto-placa – and GOV.SI describes the same base as an average monthly NET salary calculated on the basis of the average monthly GROSS salary most recently published, which is a third description of the same base and is why the reference figure carries a caution rather than a clean value.
Qualifying income basisemployment abroad, freelance work for foreign clients, own company abroad as of 2026-08-25[1][7]
All three limbs are in the first indent of article 51.a(1): employment with a business entity established outside Slovenia, work under a civil-law contract for such an entity, and work as a self-employed person abroad. GOV.SI adds that proof may be provided through any lawful source of income, as for every other category of foreigner.
Local work allowedNo as of 2026-08-25[1][7]
The permit rests on work for an entity established outside Slovenia and on the holder not entering the Slovenian labour market.
Minimum remote-working historyNot established from a qualifying source
Not established. Article 51.a sets no minimum period of prior remote work or prior tenure with the foreign employer.

Process

Process
Where to apply fromeither as of 2026-08-25[1][7]
Article 51.a(2): the application must be filed at a Slovenian diplomatic mission or consular post abroad; a foreigner already lawfully resident in Slovenia on a valid identity card or passport, on a passport plus a residence permit issued by another EU member state, on a C visa issued by Slovenia or another Schengen state, or on a D visa issued by another Schengen state may file it at the competent authority in Slovenia instead. GOV.SI states the same in English.
Statutory processing timeNot established from a qualifying source
Not established. Article 51.a states no decision period.

Quota
  • Quota exists: No as of 2026-08-25[1][7]
The digital nomad does not enter the Slovenian labour market, so labour-market admission requirements do not apply and no Employment Service consent is issued. GOV.SI states it in terms, and article 51.a has no consent step. With no consent there is nothing for a quota of consents to count.

Physical presence

Physical presence
registration onlyto keep the permit as of 2026-08-25[2]
Temporary residence must be registered with the administrative unit within eight days of entry, of service of the document, or of taking up residence.

Family inclusion

Family inclusion
Family members may be includedYes as of 2026-08-25[1][3][7]
The fourth sentence of article 47(1), as replaced by article 29 of ZTuj-2I, names the holder of a digital nomad permit among those who may reunite family members with no limit tied to residence length or permit validity.
Eligible relationsspouse, registered partner, unmarried partner, minor child, adult dependent child, parent as of 2026-08-25[4][6]
Article 47(3) of ZTuj-2 defines family members as the spouse, the partner in a registered or civil partnership or a partner in a long-lasting life community; the foreigner's minor unmarried children; the minor unmarried children of that spouse or partner; the parents of a minor foreigner with whom the foreigner lived in a family community before coming to Slovenia; and adult unmarried children and parents of the foreigner or of the spouse or partner whom they are obliged to support under the law of their state of nationality. Article 47(4) allows the authority to treat a further person as a family member by exception.
Family may apply at the same timeYes as of 2026-08-25[1][3]
The Ministry states that family may be reunited immediately and without time limits, and that the family application may be filed together with the nomad's own. GOV.SI calls this the permit's more favourable family-reunification regime. Article 47(2), as amended by ZTuj-2I article 29, adds that a family member of a holder in this exempt class who is lawfully in Slovenia when filing receives a certificate that itself serves as a temporary residence permit until the application is finally decided.
Family members' work rightsNot established from a qualifying source
Not established. Neither article 51.a nor either portal page says whether a digital nomad's family member may work in Slovenia, and the general answer for family members – an informativni list after a labour-market test – would sit oddly with a permit built on not entering the labour market.
Additional means per family member
    • Relation: spouse
    • Amount: Not established from a qualifying source
