Official name (English)Residence permit for self-employed workers as of 2023-09-01[1]
Guichet's own English rendering; its page is titled 'Conditions of residence for self-employed third-country workers' and refers to 'the residence permit for self-employed'.

Who can apply

Who can apply
Nationals not served by this routeEU, EEA, EFTA as of 2023-09-01[1]
Guichet: the route is for 'Every third-country national (i.e. a national from a country which is not an EU Member State or a country treated as such – Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland)'.
Criminal-record conditionYes as of 2023-09-01[1]
Guichet's authorisation-to-stay document list follows the same pattern as the other third-country routes, requiring a criminal-record extract or affidavit from the country of residence. Recorded from the guichet page; art. 51 itself states no criminal-record condition, the public-order test sitting in the general art. 34 entry conditions instead.

Permit terms

Permit terms
Initial durationup to 3 years as of 2026-06-12[1][2]
Art. 52(1): the permit is 'valable pour une durée maximale de trois ans'. Guichet says the same in English — 'valid for 3 years at the most as from the date of declaration of arrival in the commune'. Both sources frame three years as a ceiling, so bound 'maximum' is set. Exception stated by guichet: on a first application by a third-country national who held long-term resident status in another EU member state, the permit is issued with a five-year validity.
RenewableYes as of 2026-06-12[1][2]
Art. 52(2): renewable on request 'pour une durée maximale de trois ans, tant que les conditions visées à l'article 51, paragraphe (1), à l'exception du point 3, sont remplies' — the country-interest test of art. 51(1)3° is expressly dropped at renewal.
Renewal durationup to 3 years as of 2026-06-12[2]
Art. 52(2), same sentence.
Work rightsself-employment only as of 2026-06-12[2]

Permanent residence and citizenship

Permanent residence and citizenship
Counts toward permanent residenceYes as of 2026-06-12[1][2]
Guichet's self-employed page carries the same five-year long-term-residence pointer as the other third-country routes, and art. 80(1)'s five-year qualifying period does not exclude self-employed permit holders.

Requirements

Requirements
Minimum capitalNot applicable as of 2026-06-12[2]
Art. 51(1) states the conditions exhaustively — professional qualifications and access-to-trade conditions, adequate resources for the intended activity, a country-interest test, and a physical-presence-for-management test — and sets no minimum capital. Recorded not_applicable rather than unknown: the question was asked of the operative provision and the answer is that no such threshold exists.
Business plan requiredNot established from a qualifying source as of 2026-06-12[1][2]
Neither art. 51 nor the guichet page names a business plan as a required document. Art. 51(1)3°'s country-interest test and art. 51(3)'s commission review plainly require a substantive description of the activity, but calling that a business plan would be an inference, so the field is left unknown rather than answered either way.
Endorsement requiredYes as of 2026-06-12[2]
Art. 51(3): the commission created by art. 151 verifies whether the art. 51(1) conditions are met, except for activities holding an authorisation from the Commission de surveillance du secteur financier, which are treated as satisfying them. That is a standing vetting body sitting between the applicant and the decision, which is what this field records; it is not an accelerator or startup-committee endorsement.
Innovation criterionRecorded at the source, but not reducible to a single value as of 2026-06-12[2]
Own means requirementNot established from a qualifying source as of 2026-06-12[1][2]

Physical presence

Physical presence
maximum consecutive absence6 months · to keep the permit as of 2023-09-01[1]
none statedto keep the permit as of 2026-06-12[2]
Distinct from the absence rule above: art. 51(1)4° requires that the activity 'nécessite une présence sur le territoire du travailleur indépendant afin d'assurer une gestion journalière effective de l'entreprise'. That is a condition on the nature of the activity, not a day count on the holder, so no numeric presence rule is recorded from it.
